Our History

Founded by Earl and Katharine Carlson, and operated by their two sons, Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc. offers a tradition of a local family serving other local families, 24 hours a day- every day. With a solid reputation for family values, the Carlson family makes it a priority to serve their community with caring and compassion. This dedication to service has allowed the family business to expand across northeast Ohio to include three state-of-the-art funeral homes in Medina and Portage Counties.

For over 75 years, Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc. has been serving the community with loyalty and integrity. The Carlson Family are folks who know you; folks who you can rely on; reinvesting in the community in which they serve. Their dedication to their church, local civic groups, youth activities, and the elderly is unequaled.

Our Valued Staff

  • Dr. Michael E.  Carlson

    Dr. Michael E. Carlson, Chairman of the Board

    Dr. Michael E. Carlson has been associated with the Carlson Funeral Homes his entire life and is Chairman of the Board of K & E Carlson Inc. Mike has been very active in the community over the years. Mike was Superintendent of Highland Local Schools for 13 years and is currently President of the Board of Directors of Medina Creative Housing and Blue Coats of Medina County and serves on the Board of Visitors of Hiram College. He enjoys golf and reading, and is a member of St. Colette Church in Brunswick, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11801 in Garrettsville, longtime member of Medina Sunrise Rotary. Mike is also a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post #0674 Windham Ohio and VFW Men's Auxiliary Post #5137 Medina. He is a member of the Medina Eagles and an associate member of the Garrettsville Eagles.

  • Patrick E. Carlson

    Patrick E. Carlson, President

    Patrick E. Carlson, Master Embalmer, took an early interest in the family business. After attending Hiram College, he enrolled and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1972. He is the master embalmer for all of three funeral homes. He and his wife Patricia live in Brunswick and enjoy walking, the outdoors, and spending time with grandchildren. Patrick has four children, Trevor who is a Funeral Director and Embalmer and Vanessa who resides in New Orleans, Robert Turnick and Stephen Turnick who both reside in Medina County. He is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, and the Ohio Embalmers Assocation. He is active in many area group assocations and is a member of St. Ambrose Church in Brunswick.

  • Fred G.  Schutt

    Fred G. Schutt, Funeral Director/Embalmer

    Fred Schutt is a summa cum laude graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toledo and is a licensed X-ray and MRI Technologist for the Federal Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT). Originally from Toledo, Fred enjoys assisting families in their time of need and serving the community in the Brunswick and Medina areas. He enjoys sports, music and hiking.

  • Greg Hall

    Greg Hall, Funeral Director

    Greg is a graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He also attended the University of Akron and has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting. He likes to listen to music and enjoys watching movies. He likes spending time with his family and their dog, Sunnie.

    Trish Danku, Family Services Administrator

    Trish joined the Carlson team shortly before losing her husband. Wanting to find a way to help others, she feels blessed to work as our Pre-Planning Specialist and in our Aftercare Program with families who have already suffered a loss. Being with her son Louie and enjoying his school, band and athletic events or enjoying time golfing with girlfriends, is where you will find her when she is not working. Trish is a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church where she is a Religious Education teacher, greeter and usher, she is also a proud member of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club, Garrettsville Women in Business and Garrettsville Chamber.   • Barbara  Tuggle

    Barbara Tuggle, Executive Assistant

    Barbara is our Executive Assistant in the Medina location. She, together with her husband John and children Kurt & Alecia, calls Weymouth, Medina Township home. She enjoys spending as much time as possible with her family, doing landscaping in her yard, and shopping, shopping, shopping! Barb made a committment years ago to dedicate her working time in the health care profession. Now given the opportunity to be a part of the Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services has been an honor.

  • Christina Ladd

    Christina Ladd, Executive Assistant

    Christina is the Executive Assistant for our Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Christina is a lifelong resident of Windham. She enjoys spending time with her husband, John and children, Sam and Kayla. Christina takes great pride in being able to help families in their time of need. When not working for the Carlson's, Christina is active in her community and can be seen at her children's school and sporting events.

  • Mary C. Schutt

    Mary C. Schutt, Executive Assistant

    Mary is the Executive Assistant at our Brunswick location. Mary and her husband Fred live in Brunswick. She has a son, Michael; step-sons,Grady and Kyle; and a step-granddaughter, Lucy. She enjoys music, reading, visiting museums, and family picnics. Working together with a caring staff, she appreciates the opportunity to assist families during a difficult time, and provide a meaningful tribute to honor the ones we love.

    Vic Fackler, Grounds and Facilities Supervisor

    Vic is the grounds and facilities associate for our Garrettsville location. He is a member of the Leavittsburg First Church of the Nazarene and Garrettsville Masonic Lodge #246 . Vic is a lifelong resident of Nelson and Garrettsville. He is also a bus driver for James A. Garfield school district. Vic enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

  • Reverend Fred  Bell

    Reverend Fred Bell, Associate

    Married to Jane, four children. Graduated from Clarion High School, Clarion,Pa. Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary.
    Have served churches in the East Ohio Conference, retiring in July, 1998. In retirement I have served as an assistant at Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. I have also served as a Chaplain for the Hospice of Robinson Memorial Hospital. I was assistant Chaplain at Robinson Memorial Hospital. I am a member of the Garrettsville Masonic Lodge No 246. and have served as Chaplain of the Lodge.
    I enjoy travel and camping.

    Dana is an associate with our Medina and Brunswick homes. He resides in Brunswick with his wife Cindy and their children. Dana enjoys golfing, the outdoors, and spending time with his family.

  • Richard  Collopy

    Richard Collopy, Associate

    Rich is a life long resident of Garrettsville, Ohio. He and his wife Melanie and their two daughters, Abby and Miley are members of the United Methodist Church of Garrettsville. He is a member of Garrettsville Masonic Lodge #246 and Silver Creek chapter #144 Roayl Arch Masons of Ohio and O.E.S. Cresecent chapter #7. He is currently employed for (MRCG) Kraftmaid of Middlefield for 25+ years. His interests include anything fast and loud, hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor fun.

    Brian Coughlin, Associate

    Brian is an Associate for the Brunswick and Medina Funeral Homes. He and his wife Regina live in Medina with their children. Brian is active in the community and a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.

  • Michael  Davanzo

    Michael Davanzo, Associate

    Michael Davanzo is a retired School Teacher and athletic administrator from the Medina City Schools. He and his wife Judith live in Medina Township. He is active in the Medina Sunrise Rotary and has served as the District 6630 District Governor in 2014-15. He also enjoys gardening, travelling, and reading. He attends St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

    Virginia "Ginny" DellaTorre, Associate

    I am a 10 year resident of Garrettsville and St. Ambrose Catholic Church. I have 4 children, 2 in New Jersey, 1 in Arizona and 1 in Virginia, and 5 wonderful grandchildren. I love to garden flowers and vegetables. I am also an avid reader. Working at Carlson's is such a privilege and way to give back for all the help I was given when my husband passed away.

  • Pastor Greg Ebie

    Pastor Greg Ebie, Associate

    Greg and his wife Susie live in Freedom Township. Together they enjoy spending time with their five adult children, a family which continues to grow through marriage and the joy of grandchildren (you’re right he doesn’t look old enough to be a papa). He serves as the lead pastor at the Life Church Assembly of God here in Garrettsville since October 1998 and has been an ordained minister with the Ohio Assemblies of God since 1989. He has been an associate with Carlson Funeral Home since 2011.

  • Norm Fashing

    Norm Fashing, Associate

    Norm Fashing has been with the company since November of 2009. Norm is a retired teacher who lives in Garrettsville with his wife Joyce. Norm has two adult children and five grandchildren. An avid Ohio State sports fan, Norm’s hobbies are hunting, fishing, and enjoying his family.
    Norm and Joyce are co-founders of the Friends of Melana Children’s Glioma Cancer Foundation, named in loving memory of their beloved granddaughter, Melana Matson. Their primary goal is to raise awareness and funds for research for this devastating childhood disease.

  • Frank Gharky

    Frank Gharky, Associate

    Frank has been an Associate for the Garrettsville Funeral Home since 2012. He is a retired employee of the State of Ohio. He is a resident of Auburn Township in Geauga County where he lives with his wife of 20+ years. He is also a part time maintenance worker for the State of Ohio and enjoys spending time camping, bicycling, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

    Don is currently working for our Garrettsville location and also delivering for the Bay Window. He retired from the Garrettsville Volunteer Fire Department after 56 years of service. Don also retired from General Electric in Ravenna. He is the co founder of the Community Ambulance, inc.. Don has lived in the Garrettsville area his entire life. He lives with his daughter-in-law, Sue and granddaughter, Mckenna. In his spare time, Don likes to woodwork.

  • Ed  Hrobak

    Ed Hrobak, Associate

    A Carlson Associate for over 45 years. He is a life time resident of Nelson/Garrettsville area. He and his wife Linda have two daughters, four granddaughters and one grandson. Ed enjoys gardening, yardwork, working jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and spending time with family. He is a member of American Legion Post 0674 in Windham.

    Harold Kaufman, Associate

    Harold is an Associate with the Brunswick and Medina Funeral Homes. He and his wife Kay reside in Sharon Township. He has three children and seven grandchildren. Harold enjoys collecting stamps, gardening, and is a florist by trade. He attends First Christian Church of Medina.

  • Al Kovacs

    Al Kovacs, Associate

    Al has been working for the Garrettsville location since 2014. He lives in Southington with his wife Jolene. Al has 2 children and 2 grandchildren. He retired from Stouffers after 33 years of service. Al enjoys riding motorcycles, wood working, shooting pool, golfing, bowling, fishing and gun shooting. When not working for Carlson's, he can be seen showing his car at the local car shows.

  • Dennis Kraynik

    Dennis Kraynik, Associate

    Dennis is an Associate for the Medina and Brunswick Funeral Homes. He and his wife Diane live in Wadsworth and they have one daughter. He is semi-retired and enjoys cooking, gardening, music, and spending time with his family and friends.

  • John Masters

    John Masters, Associate

    John has lived his entire life in the Nelson/Garrettsville area. He and his wife Monica reside in Nelson Township and attend Delightful E. C. Church in Southington. Parents of two daughters, their daughter Detra, passed away in 2001 from Cystic Fibrosis, and daughter Ashley. They are grandparents to one grandson, Jayden. In March of 2015, John retired after 40 years with Ohio Aluminum Aerospace in Cleveland. With a desire to help families of the community, he joined the Carlson Family in October 2015.

  • Bob May

    Bob May, Associate

    Robert May is a Real Estate Manager for Firehouse Subs and an associate for Carlson Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. Born in Erie, PA, Bob has resided in Garrettsville since 1998. Bob has been involved in several retail businesses and service companies since high school because of his passion for working with people. He is very active with St. Ambrose Church activities, including the Knights of Columbus. Bob enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors with his wife Valerie and son Zachary.

  • Paul Milliken

    Paul Milliken, Associate

    Paul is an associate with our Medina and Brunswick homes. He lives in Medina with his wife Beth. They have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. He is a retired United Methodist Pastor and Chaplain in the U. S. Air Force Reserves. Paul enjoys playing racquetball and tennis, reading and doing puzzles.

  • Scott Morris

    Scott Morris, Associate

    Scott has been working for the Garrettsville location since 2014. He lives in Garrettsville with his wife Debi. Debi and Scott have 5 children and 9 grandchildren. Scott is retired from the United States Coast Guard and later a civilian career with the Defense Department. He and his wife are full-time RV'rs who volunteer at America's National Parks during the winter. Scott enjoys riding motorcycles, American history, genealogy, wood working, hunting, fishing, and boating. He is a member of Collinwood Lodge #582 in Euclid, Mt. Olive Chapter No. 189 Royal Arch Masons, Coeur de Lion No. 64 of Knights Templar, American Legion Post #193 in Mantua, Travelers Woods Masonic Campground in Garrettsville, Widow Sons Masonic Motorcycle Riders Chapter 3-5-7, Quantrill's Raiders Camp #2087 Sons of Confederate Veterans and the SCV's Mechanized Cavalry motorcycle association in his spare time.

    Jim Mottice, Associate

    Jim is an associate with our Medina and Brunswick homes. He resides in Medina with his wife Barb. Jim enjoys golfing, the outdoors, and spending time with his family. He has been associated with Rustic Hills Country Club for the past 28 years.

  • Bill  Owen

    Bill Owen, Associate

    Bill has been a resident of this community for better than 70 years. He was married to Tillie Owen for 65 years, before losing her to pancreatitis. Bill has three daughters, Becky, Pat and Debi and now has four grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is a World War II veteran having served his country in the United States Navy and a retired Rural Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal System. Bill is a member of Garrettsville Lodge #246 in which he served as the secreatry for 50 years. Bill is a member of the United Methodist Church of Garrettsville, Bill enjoys playing cards, watching the Cavs, Indians, Browns and spending time with my family and friends.

    Dave is an Associate with our Garrettsville funeral home and also delivers flowers for the Bay Window. He worked for Nestle for 36 years. Dave enjoys going to auctions, traveling and spending time with his family. He spends much of his free time going on nature walks.

    Robert is an Associate currently working the Brunswick and Medina Funeral Home. He is a retired Strongsville School Teacher who enjoys traveling with his wife Deb.
