DR. BROCK T. CARTER

January 31, 1938 — December 25, 2009

Dr. Brock T. Carter passed away peacefully with his wife and loved ones by his side at his home on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009. He was born in 1938 to Brock J. and Valeria L. Carter in Jamestown, New York. Brock and his parents lived in Jamestown, New York and then moved to Cleveland Heights, Ohio when he was the age of seven.

He grew up in Cleveland Heights and graduated from University School in Shaker Heights in 1955 and then went on to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts for two years, returning to Cleveland to attend Case Western Reserve University where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in June of 1962. Brock received his fellowship, one of the highest honors in dentistry, from the Academy of General Dentistry in 1988. From 1963 to 1965 Brock completed an oral surgery internship at Fordham Hospital in New York City. Brock became a Captain and was the acting oral surgeon for two years at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico from 1965-1967. Brock started his private practice in 1968 in Brunswick, Ohio. He practiced for 39 years, emphasizing the treatment of the apprehensive patient. He utilized hypnosis as an adjunctive treatment and for several years lectured to dental groups on this subject. He also wrote a revision of a classic text on dental hypnosis called “Handbook of Hypnotic Techniques” which was published in 1987. Brock retired to Hilton Head Island in December of 2007.

Brock loved his profession as a dentist and enjoyed his patients and staff throughout the years. Brock and his wife made mission trips with a medical/dental group to El Salvador, where he extracted nearly 900 teeth in one week, often working outside under cashew trees. Shortly after retiring, Brock gave many years of his time to the “Volunteers of Medicine” on Hilton Head Island. Brock loved the theatre and acting. He started acting in little theatre in New York, New Mexico, Ohio, and then Hilton Head. He loved and enjoyed all aspects of acting but particularly comedies. He began his thespian hobby in New Mexico and continued throughout his life. The most enjoyable play Brock was in was the lead role in “Harvey”…He also enjoyed acting in “The Man Who Came to Dinner”… “Christmas Story”... “West Side Story” and many others in the Hilton Head area.

Brock enjoyed skiing in the winter, fishing, golfing, and boating on Lake Erie in the summer up north. After moving to Hilton Head Island, Brock enjoyed a variety of activities including golf, tennis, and one of the most enjoyable was being a kayak guide. He loved the beauty of the island and the low country local flora and fauna. Brock’s sense of humor was well known and he just loved life. He spent his life always finding the good in people.

Brock leaves behind his beloved wife of 23 years, D’Jean Carter, of Bluffton, South Carolina. He also leaves his son, Don Carter and wife MaryJo of Parma, Ohio, his daughter, Dawn Peck and husband Chris of Mandeville, Louisiana, and his son, Robert Helle and wife Angela of Stanley, North Carolina. He will be missed greatly by his four grandchildren, Daniel Carter, Miranda Peck, Krista Helle, and Robbie Helle.
