DOROTHY M. THOMPSON
April 5, 1926 — December 11, 2016
Dorothy M. Thompson (nee Malak), age 90, of Chesterfield, Missouri, formerly of Brunswick, passed away December 11, 2016. She was born April 5, 1926 in Campbell, Ohio to the late Andrew and Anna (nee Jakubek) Malak.
Her father, Andrew Malak, was a tailor who had immigrated to this country from Bratislava, and her mother from Spisska Nova Ves, in what is now Slovakia. Dorothy graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1944 and Ohio University in 1948. She worked as a “Rosie the Riveter,” then served as a meteorological observer at Huntington, West Virginia, before moving to the Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area, where she met and married her husband of over 50 years, James R. Thompson. The family moved to Brunswick in 1968.
In addition to raising her family, Dorothy taught at St. Ambrose elementary school, and periodically served as a poll worker for the Board of Elections. She spent many years as a real estate agent, working with Orlandi, Lucas, Lance; and, later, Realty 1. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and music; and, in later years, visits from her children and grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her four children: David and wife Denise (Fond du Lac, WI), George and wife Linda (Springfield, VA), Nora and husband Roderick Mahurin (Edmonds, WA), and John and wife Alethea (Chesterfield, MO), as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James; her parents; and siblings Stephen, Helen, Edward, Judy, and JoAnne, as well as her son Stephen and her daughter Dorothy.
Friends may join the family for visitation Friday, December 16, 2016 from 2 until 4 pm at Carlson Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 1642 Pearl Road, (1/2 mile south of Route 303) Brunswick, Ohio 44212. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 1:15 pm at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 929 Pearl Rd, Brunswick, Ohio 44212. There will be a visitation one hour prior to Mass at 12:15 pm (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH). Interment to follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Brunswick.
