HAZEL S. BEATTY

February 12, 1931 — November 28, 2020

Hazel Beatty, 89, of Garrettsville, joined her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 28, 2020. She was born February 12, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio to Roy & Pollyanna (Buzek) Lucas.

Though Hazel spent her early childhood in the city, she took to horses when the family moved to the country. Her father bought her a pony and horses followed. Hazel loved riding, and with her sister Virginia, rode in the annual Garrettsville parades. She even tried to get other family members to ride with them.

Hazel was a dog person, but she didn't ignore cats. Over the years she had several pet dogs, who were part of her family. She always had a soft spot for the “critters.” She fed the stray cat and watched out for the nearby wild animals.

Hazel and husband Neal, lived in Florida for a time before moving to Garrettsville. She was the kind of person you'd want for your neighbor. Always quick with a smile and a laugh, Hazel was the kind of person you'd want to talk to over the back fence.

Somewhat of a handywoman, if something needed fixed or mended Hazel found a way. While not always by the book, she'd mend that hole in the fence, paint what needed it. She didn't wait. She fixed it.

Mary Ann and Homer, Hazel's sister and brother, gifted her a new, shiny green, riding lawn mower. While she couldn't get up on a horse any longer, she rode that mower for miles and miles. She took great pride in her lawn and that mower. She would have looked good in a TV commercial.

Hazel was a poet. As an old school poet, she had the traditional typewriter, so you knew she measured her words carefully. A poem that she wrote, “Who's Mother Is She?” was published and recited at a Mother's Day gathering. It's a poem about the gifts our mothers bestow on us and what we should give in return.

Hazel will be deeply missed by her loving siblings Homer Lucas, Sr., Mary Ann Nitsky, Virginia Sheller, as well as many loving family members and friends. She was greeted in Heaven by her beloved husband, Neal V. Beatty, Sr., son Neal Beatty, Jr, daughter Laurie McCarley, and brother Roy Lucas, Jr., as well as her parents.

Graveside services will be held at Drakesburg Cemetery in Freedom Township on Friday, December 4, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. Services for Hazel were entrusted to Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services 8382 Center Street, Garrettsville, Ohio, 44231.
