Reland graduated from Columbia High School in 1936 and married Phyllis on Aug 16, 1941 at First Methodist Church in Columbia Station. Reland entered the Army Air Core in 1942 and was a T/Sgt. in the 301st Bomber Group of the 15th Air Force. He flew 68 missions during WWII and parachuted out of his burning aircraft on Dec 26, 1944. Reland was shot down over Poland, was MIA for three weeks, and was decorated with the Silver Star, Air Medal with Four Clusters, and Four Battle Stars. He pitched for the squadron softball team and caught for the squadron baseball team. Phyllis and Reland established their home in Columbia Station working in Bartter-Martin Greenhouse and on the family farm. In 1951, they moved to Hinckley Ridge in Medina County and began dairy farming. In 1956 they moved to another dairy farm in Guilford Township. From 1976-1989, Reland and Phyllis co-founded Martin Public Seating which was later sold to son, Jim Martin. Reland retired in 2008 at the age of 90, cherishing the time of visiting with school personnel. Reland was a 4-H leader, member of Farm Bureau, Guilford Grange, and a charter member of Seville Kiwanis, which honored him with the Hickson Award. He was an active school volunteer for the Cloverleaf School District: served as first president of the Sports Booster Club, chaired fund raising committee for the football stadium, and received first honorary Varsity “C” Club member. His church family at Seville United Methodist was very important to him, and he served as chairperson of Pastor Parish Committee and other positions. He loved to make homemade ice cream for the Peach Festival and prepare food for Mother-Daughter Banquets. He was instrumental in raising funds for the Fellowship Hall addition. Reland enjoyed traveling, golfing, and supporting his children and grandchildren during their academic, athletic, and musical endeavors. He greeted many with, “Let me tell you about my children and grandchildren…” Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 2 to 6 PM at Carlson Funeral Home 3477 Medina Rd.
