ROBERT FRANCIS BISHOP

Robert Francis Bishop, 91, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, at his home in The Villages. He enjoyed a rich, full life with his devoted wife of 66 years, Winifred E. (Baxter) Bishop, and leaves a legacy of love, faith, kindness, and integrity for his family and friends.
Bob was born April 17, 1924, in Garrettsville, Ohio, to parents Willard and Annah (Crites) Bishop. He graduated from Garrettsville High School in 1942, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy a year later. During World War II, he served on the battleship USS New Jersey, playing trombone with the ship’s band as well as loading the starboard anti-aircraft guns.
After the war, Bob returned to Ohio and resumed courting his sweetheart, Winnie Baxter. They married in Garrettsville on May 27, 1949. Bob earned a degree in management engineering in a dual program with a B.A. from Hiram College and B.S. from Carnegie-Mellon University. After graduation, they settled in North Canton, Ohio, where Bob started his career with the Hoover Company.
Bob and Winnie were blessed with four beautiful children: Debbie, Laurie, Bob, and Becky. During the course of his career in quality control and plant management, Bob also worked at General Tire, White Consolidated, and Condec. This brought many adventurous moves for the family throughout the eastern United States.
One constant in their lives was summer visits to Lake Milton, Ohio. The family cottage became a favorite gathering spot for Bob and Winnie, their friends, their children, and, in time, their grandchildren.
Bob (“Papa”) loved boating, tinkering with projects in his garage, playing reveille on the trombone to rouse his family for church, solving Sudoku puzzles, and imparting words of wisdom to the younger generations. He and Winnie enjoyed living in The Villages, attending concerts, and taking cruises. He was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason of 60+ years, and a lifelong supporter of the Republican Party.
Bob will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Winifred; children Debra (Bruce) Brixey of The Villages, Dr. Laurie Bishop (Dale) Crochet of Slidell, Louisiana, Robert (Shelley) Bishop of Dublin, Ohio, and Becky (Paul) Kasselman of Albany, New York; sister Jeanne Cates and brother Donald Bishop. Papa’s legacy will live on in grandchildren Stephanie (Matt) Barkow, Carolyn and Emily Crochet, Kristen, Matthew and Sarah Bishop, and Steven and Brad Kasselman; as well as great-grandson Colin Barkow.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Park Cemetery in Garrettsville, Ohio. Arrangements were entrusted to Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services 8382 Center St. Garrettsville, OH 44231.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helping Hands Ministry at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 3470 Woodridge Dr., The Villages, FL 32162.
