ROSEMARY SZYKOWNY

April 8, 1925 — June 29, 2019

ROSEMARY SZYKOWNY (ZULLO), age 94, passed peacefully in the loving care of those at the Western Reserve Masonic Community in Medina, Ohio on June 29, 2019.

Rosemary, affectionately known as Doll, was the daughter of John and Genevieve Zullo; wife of Thaddeus (“Ted”); mother of Maryellen (Terry) Kebbel, Nancy (John) Pierce, and Thomas Szykowny (Susan Dutton); grandmother of Rebecca Kebbel, Andrew Kebbel, Kathryn (Judd) Cribbs, Jonathan Pierce (Alli Fogle), Rob Szykowny, Ellie (Matt) Heavner, Natalie Szykowny; and great-grandmother of Elsee and Ethan Cribbs, and Lucy Heavner. Rosemary is survived by her sister, Frances Groomes of St. Louis, MO, and her brother-in-law, Paul Radice of South Euclid, OH.

She was pre-deceased by her husband; siblings John Zullo (Elsa), Marie Silvester (John), Louise Radice; and grandchildren Zachary Kebbel and Emily Pierce. She leaves many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

The introduction to Ted by her sorority sister (Lucille Needham) led to a cross-town Polish-Italian street car romance, culminating in a wedding at Holy Rosary Church in Cleveland’s Little Italy on May 13, 1950. Through the end of her life, Rosemary had a ready smile and found happiness in helping others. A mother, Office Manager at Manpower Temporary Inc., social worker for Cuyahoga County Children’s Services, and Coordinator of Goldwood Elementary Bear’s Den, she was of a practical mind, and always found the courage and energy to improve a situation for those around her. Rosemary cherished her family and was cherished in return. Her refrain was “tell me what needs to be done,” whether she was working to support three children as a young widow or adjusting to the challenges of aging; she navigated life without complaint and with a “thank you anyway.” Rosemary will be remembered for her boundless kindness and wisdom, her devotion to family, and the joy of friends and family gathered around a table filled with meatballs and cavatelli.

Arrangements by Carlson Funeral Home with private Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Family will gather in the months to come to celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, consider a random act of kindness in Rosemary’s memory.
