Andrew “Andy” J. Shimko, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. He was born on September 20, 1941, to the late Ignatius M. and Cecelia M. (nee Hudak) Shimko.
Andy grew up in the Slovak neighborhoods of Lakewood, graduating from St. Edward High School, then serving in the Army as a medic stationed in Germany. What followed was a long career in the printing industry and raising his family in Strongsville. An active member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and a long-time bowler, he devoted countless hours each year in planning and running the annual C.O.F. Kentucky/Indiana/Ohio Bowling Tournament. And on Thursday nights he could usually be found calling numbers at Bingo Night at St. Joseph Parish.
After moving to Brunswick, Andy joined American Legion Post 234, and enjoyed serving in their Honor Guard and socializing with the other members. In retirement he and Mary split their time between Ohio (attending their grandchildren’s many activities) and their house in Largo, Florida. Although not a golfer, he did enjoy performing in the Parks Chorus and attending the many parties and dances there.
Andrew loved his family and the time they spent together. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Mary E. (nee Reeder) Shimko; children, Andrew (Ellen) Shimko Jr and Laura (Thomas) Quisenberry. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Alyssa (Michael), Tyler (Jenny)Anne-Marie, Erik, and William; brothers, Thomas (Linda) Shimko and Richard (Joanne).
In addition to his parents, Andrew is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Larry) Katz.
